Belgian mobile modem manufacturer, Option says that it has extended itssoftware license agreement with Huawei and has received a payment of EUR 11million.This extension comes as part of the cooperation agreement signed with Huaweiin October 2010 where Huawei agreed to license Option's uCAN ConnectionManagement software, for which the first year of the license was valued at EUR27 million. The agreement also included the potential for extensions of thelicense for an amount of up to EUR 33 million over the next 18 months.This transaction, triggered by having reached mutually agreed contractualmilestones, is the first of the potential extensions.Option originally filed an anti-dumping complaint with the European Unionagainst Huawei, but later dropped it after the two companies agreed on acooperation deal.

A Kuwaiti man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for insulting theProphet Muhammad and the Sunni Muslim rulers of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain onmicroblogging website Twitter.A court in Kuwait on June 4 found 22-year-old Shi'ite Muslim Hamad al-Naqiguilty of all charges.Naqi had pleaded innocent at the start of the trial last month, claiming thathis Twitter account had been hacked and that he did not post the messages.In recent months, Kuwaiti courts have issued jail terms against tweeters andactivists amid a sharp rise in sectarian tensions between the emirate's Sunnimajority and Shi'ite minority.The country's Islamist-controlled parliament passed a law last monthstipulating the death penalty for serious religious offenses.The law has not been implemented yet.Copyright © 2012. Kuwait's Zain is mulling a return to the African continent three years afterit sold the bulk of its networks there to India's Bharti Airtel.Zain's CEO said that the company is interested in North Africa and could bidto buy local companies, or take on management contracts to run them.Zain owns a 15.5% stake in Morocco based Inwi, butotherwise has no other presence in the region.Zain would like to increase its holding in Inwi and also seek managementcontrol of other operators in Arabic-speaking North Africa as opportunitiesarise, Scott Gegenheimer told the Reuters mews agency."North Africa looks very interesting and there are always opportunitiescoming up. The number of consumers purchasing physical goods remotely via their mobilehandsets is expected to increase by nearly 50% over the next two years, a newreport from Juniper Research has found.According to the report, the strong growth -- taking user numbers to 580million by the end of 2014, up from 393 million this year -- is the directresult of greater consumer confidence in the mobile device as both a contentbrowsing and payment mechanism. It also reflects the increasing importance ofmobile as an eRetail channel, with retailers witnessing a marked uplift inmobile as a proportion of online transactions.Indeed, the report also found that both the average size and scale ofpurchases would continue to rise markedly, bolstered by larger volumes ofregular, higher-value transactions such as the weekly shop.Lack of Optimisation Hinders Mobile RetailHowever, the report cautioned that growth continued to be constrained by thefact that a majority of retailer sites are still not optimised for mobilebrowsing, registration or purchasing. According to report author Dr WindsorHolden, "Consumers increasingly expect to be able to buy their products andservices via their smartphones and tablets. Companies which do not offer thisoption face falling behind their competitors."Furthermore, the report pointed out that concerns about transaction securitywere still paramount amongst end users, although the scale of these concerns wasnot yet being translated into consumer adoption of security solutions on thehandset.Other key findings from the report include:Total annual transaction values from remote digital and physical goodspurchases will hit $730bn within five years.eRetail is migrating to smartphones and tablets, with average tablettransaction sizes already exceeding those on desktops and laptopsOperator billing deployments are becoming more widespread, but arecurrently limited to digital purchases
Cameroon is set to gain its third mobile network later this month, whenSet'Mobile launches its services.The network, founded by local footballer, Samuel Eto'o and named after hisinitials, started selling SIM cards last week and has already sold out with50,000 cards distributed.The network will be activated on January 21, which is also the opening day ofthe 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.The country currently has two mobile networks, MTN and Orange.
