Microsoft has confirmed that it is investigating reports of unusual datatraffic from smartphones running the Windows Phone 7 operating system.Complaints have emerged from online forums of Windows based smartphones sending"between 30 and 50MB of data" every day, even when the handset is onlybeing used sporadically.Most of the complaints have emerged in the USA, where the OS has a strongermarket share."I received an e-mail from AT&T saying that I was close to my 2GBdata limit which truly shocked me as I feel I do not use data that much,"Paul Thurrott's supersite for Windows reported. Another user said that they hadnoticed that the phone's "idle data usage is around 2-5MB per hour".Some have speculated that the anomalous data could be feedback informationbeing sent to Microsoft."We are investigating this issue to determine the root cause and willupdate with information and guidance as it becomes available," a Microsoftspokesperson told the BBC News. The company is already planning an OS upgradewithin the next couple of months to add requested functionality, includingcopy/paste.It is not currently clear if Microsoft would offer compensation to affectedcustomers who might go over their tariff data usage limits.There were also reports last year that Apple's iPhone was also sending anomalousdata, but always overnight when the phones were not typically being used bytheir owners.On the web: BBC News
